Meteora Μετέωρα
Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Thessaly where Orthodox monasteries stand on sandstone pillars up to 400 metres high. Six remain active. It is about 350 km from Athens, so we recommend one night in Kalambaka rather than a single long day.
From the 14th century, monks climbed these towering rock formations to find isolation. Monasteries were built on top, at first reached by ladders and nets. Today there are roads and steps, but the sense of being suspended between earth and sky remains.
Meteora is a working religious site. Visitors must dress modestly, and each monastery closes one day a week. We plan your visit around these rules and aim for the quieter hours.
Highlights
- Great Meteoron Monastery
- Varlaam Monastery
- Sunset from the Psaropetra viewpoint
- Holy Trinity Monastery
- Kalambaka and Kastraki villages
Best time to visit Meteora
April–June, September–October. Spring greens and clear autumn light are ideal. Summer is busy at midday; winter can bring fog (atmospheric but limiting views) and occasional snow.
What to do
Two or three monasteries, unhurried
We choose monasteries by day of the week, since each closes on a different day, and visit the Great Meteoron for its museum and frescoes.
Tip: Dress code: shoulders and knees covered. Skirts or wraps are sometimes lent at the entrance.
Sunset at the viewpoints
The light on the rocks in the last hour of the day is the reason photographers come.
Hiking the old monk paths
Easy trails between pillars show the original stepped routes monks used.

Where to stay
- Kalambaka: The main town below the rocks, with restaurants and hotels.
- Kastraki: A quiet village directly beneath the pillars, with rooms that look onto the rock.
Getting there
- By road from Athens: roughly 4.5 hours (about 350 km) via the E75 and Trikala.
- By train: Athens to Kalambaka takes around 5 hours with a change at Palaiofarsalos.
Local tips
- Photography inside churches is not allowed.
- Check monastery weekly closing days before fixing dates.
Detail from Greek sources
- Greek monastery listings show opening times vary by monastery and season. For example, Varlaam is reported open 09:00–16:00 and closed on Fridays from 1 April to 31 October, and closed on Thursdays and Fridays from 1 November to 31 March. This is exactly why we choose monasteries by day of the week.
- A modest dress code is required in all monasteries. The detail (for example, long skirts for women, covered shoulders) is set by each monastery, so we brief you before the visit.

Frequently asked questions
Can Meteora be done as a day trip from Athens?
It is possible but long, with about nine hours of driving. A private overnight in Kalambaka is far more rewarding and lets you see sunset and sunrise.
Are the monasteries accessible?
Several involve stairs. The Great Meteoron has many steps, while Roussanou has a footbridge. Tell us about mobility needs and we will choose accordingly.
